Are You Valuing Professional Services the Right Way?

There’s an irony we often overlook — people usually value tangible goods like gold, cars, or mobile phones far more than they value intangible professional services.

In many cases, price becomes the only yardstick for making a decision.

When we talk about professional services, this includes the work of Doctors, Interior Designers, Advocates, Chartered Accountants, CXOs, and others — whether they offer services independently or as employees in a corporate setup.

Let’s look at a simple example:

Mr. X wants to file his income tax return. He considers two options:

  1. Mr. Y: A commerce graduate with 10 years of experience in ITR filing. He uses standard software and charges ?500. Most of Mr. X’s colleagues use his service.
  2. A Practising Professional : A qualified Professional who charges higher fees than Mr.Y and in line with his institution’s minimum fee guidelines. This professional is known for quality service, compliance accuracy, nd long-term financial guidance.

Despite being in a senior role and earning a high salary with multiple income sources (salary, rent, equity profits), Mr. X chooses the lower-cost option — Mr. Y.

Two Years Later:

Mr. X receives an income tax notice with a demand far exceeding the original “savings” on fees. Mr. Y lacks the expertise to respond, and can’t even provide proper records. He suggests Mr. X now consult a qualified Professional .

So what went wrong?

People often undervalue the role of qualified professionals, focusing only on immediate costs instead of long-term value.

Here are some important aspects to evaluate when choosing a professional:

  1. Value Beyond Cost: Consider the net benefit — what you pay vs. what you gain in peace of mind, accuracy, compliance, and time saved.
  2. Due Diligence: Seek professionals with reliable references and credible backgrounds.
  3. Governing Bodies: Check if the professional is regulated by a statutory body, which ensures accountability and ethical standards.

I’m personally a fan of how platforms like Urban Company have transformed the service ecosystem — bringing structure, transparency, and reliability to carpentry, plumbing, and appliance services. Pricing is standard, ratings are visible, and warranties are offered. Compare that to the old days when local service providers operated with no consistency or accountability.

It’s time to change the lens — let’s assess professionals based on their technical expertise, track record, and value creation, before evaluating the price.

Because any successful professional has made significant investments in continuous learning, R&D, and developing rich, diverse experience. Their pricing reflects not just time, but the value of expertise.

What’s your take on this? Have you faced a similar experience? Let’s discuss in the comments.
