I’ve always resonated deeply with the word “Frugal.” But it was Late CA Rakesh Jhunjhunwala who gave it a new dimension for me.
When a reporter once referred to Akasa Air as a low-cost airline, Rakeshji gently corrected them — saying,
“Akasa is not low-cost, it’s frugal.”
That single word — frugal — captured so much of what my parents taught me growing up, and what I learned again during my CA Articleship.
? Frugal means being careful and thoughtful in how you spend — not being cheap.
It’s about asking:
Do I really need this?
Is this worth the price?
Being greedy is wanting more without spending, but being frugal is spending wisely — with intention and value in mind.
Frugality matters in business as much as it does in personal life.
I remember a CEO I once worked with who preferred overnight train travel over business-class flights — not because he couldn’t afford it, but because he believed in value.
“Actions speak louder than words.”
This mindset applies in decision-making too. Ask yourself:
“If I were buying this item with my own money, would I still pay this price?”
Think like a promoter, even if you’re an employee.
Frugality isn’t about denial — it’s about discipline and direction.
Save, and invest wisely towards goals like buying a home, your child’s education, retirement, or that dream vacation.
What does frugality mean to you — and where do you practice it in life or leadership?
