The Beginning: Vodafone SSC, 2008
Back in 2008, during the Sub-Prime crisis, I became the 33rd employee at Vodafone Shared Services (SSC) in Ahmedabad. At a time when most industries froze increments and cut costs, SSCs were quietly growing — laying the foundation for something far bigger.
The Rise of Shared Services
India witnessed a wave of SSCs being established, bringing both centralized and decentralized operations in Finance, HR, and IT.
Finance, in particular, was restructured into specialized domains:
- Procure to Pay (P2P)
- Order to Cash (O2C)
- Record to Report (R2R)
- Master Data Management, Treasury, Tax, and more
Meanwhile, automation was accelerating with:
- Touchless invoicing
- Automated payment posting
- Auto bank reconciliations (MT940)
- Automated journal postings
SSCs may not have created immediate cost arbitrage, but they built the foundation for automation and large-scale transformation.
From SSC to GCC (Global Capability Centers ): A Global Shift
Fast forward to today, SSCs have evolved into GCCs — the backbone of large enterprises worldwide.
The numbers are impressive:
- India now hosts 1,900+ GCCs, employing over 2 million professionals
- Mega GCCs like JPMorgan Chase (5,000+ employees), Citi (32,000), HSBC (24,000)
- As per Economic Times, India already has 70+ GCCs with 5,000+ employees each, a number expected to reach 250 in the next 5 years
- At least six Indian states have dedicated Global Capability Centres (GCC) policies: Karnataka, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh
GCCs are no longer “back-office” setups — they are innovation hubs creating products, solving complex problems, and driving transformation with AI, ML, and now Agentic AI.
My Global Capability Centers (GCC) Experience: Welspun GCC
Based on my journey, I firmly believe:
For scalable and sustainable organizations, GCCs are no longer a choice — they are a necessity.
At Welspun GCC, where I’ve been working for over two years (managing the $5B Welspun Group), we are moving beyond services to build B2B SaaS capabilities.
I’m proud to share that we recently launched WelHire — our AI-powered recruitment platform designed to help organizations hire the best talent, faster. From writing job descriptions to managing interviews, WelHire automates the hiring journey with AI precision — helping businesses identify, engage, and onboard top talent efficiently.
Gratitude & The Road Ahead
I deeply appreciate the support of ICAI, GIFT authorities, the Government of Gujarat, and the Government of Indiafor building a world-class ecosystem that empowers GCCs — not only for Indian companies but also for global enterprises.
