It is an obvious question to ask How many people in India are investing in mutual fund out of Total population of 140 cr. According to AMFI website as on 28th Feb,2023 , there are a total 14.42 cr Mutual Accounts(folio) in india. Less than 4 cr Indians have invested in Mutual Funds .Folio means unique registration number with each Mutual Fund Company .Single investor can invest in multiple mutual fund companies and will have multiple folio numbers.
You will get the idea that Retail Investor is contributing 80% of total accounts i.e 11.54 cr .
Total Asset Under Management (AUM) in MF is Rs. 40.69 Lakhs Crore as on 28th Feb,2023.

MF AUM as compared to GDP is very low . It is less than 20% in India as compared to 120% in the USA. As per SEBI research , only 27% of the Indian population is financially literate . In Spite of various financial awareness programs like Mutual fund Sahi hai advertisement , the majority of the population has not invested in mutual fund investment.
Equity Mutual funds help to create wealth in the long term however for a retail investor who is residing in villages , it is not easy to understand what is Large cap or mid cap mutual fund .
In the recent past there has been a huge jump from retail investors in Mutual funds. This has to further move to Tier-III and Tier- IV cities .
Objective of this post to give an idea about the current number of Mutual fund Accounts in India .Out of 43.50 cr PAN Card holders only less than 4 crore Indians have invested in mutual funds.
